History Woven in Carpets – the first international exhibition held in Khiva Echoes of the past, living traditions, and inspiration for the future

Throughout the centuries, the art of carpet weaving, created by our ancestors, has reflected the cultural memory, artistic vision, and national pride of our people.

A carpet is not only an artifact, but also a cultural symbol, embodying the spirit, lifestyle, and worldview of the people.

To preserve, develop, and worthily represent this rich heritage to the world stage, the first international exhibition “Carpets in splendor” was held on October 18-19, 2025, in the historic city of Khiva, in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan № DP-60 (January 28, 2022) “On measures to develop handicrafts and provide comprehensive support for craftsmen” and the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers № DP 210 (May 12, 2023) “On measures to develop the carpet-weaving industry and expand the market for national carpet products.”

The “Arda Khiva” complex, featuring modern facilities, was chosen for the exhibition. Scenes and podiums were decorated here, and 35 special tents were installed for local and foreign masters, with 20 allocated to local participants and 15 to foreign participants. The event brought together 70 craftsmen from 14 regions of Uzbekistan and 34 masters from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.

The central part of the exhibition was the exposition “History Woven in Carpets.” It featured traditional patterns, carpets dyed with natural colors, contemporary designs, and archival photographs.

Each carpet seemed to tell a story of the nation’s fate, labor, and dreams.

Within the exhibition framework, a scientific-practical conference titled “Carpet weaving of Uzbekistan: tradition and innovation” was held with the participation of 16 scholars and specialists from Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. Discussions focused on the use of natural dyes, export potential, new design approaches, and the revival of endangered carpet types.

Fates woven on carpet lines

Ilhom Davletov, a master who revived ancient traditions

Renowned Uzbek carpet weaver Ilhom Davletov won 1st place in the “Carpet weaver reviving ancient traditions” nomination. In his works, one can see the harmony of colors and a unique description of geometric patterns characteristic of the Khorezm school of carpet weaving. His carpets are not only ornaments but also woven chronicles of history and thought.

Madrakhim Matkarimov – a craftsman who speaks the language of colors

Winner of the “Best carpet weaver” nomination, Madrakhim Matkarimov, brings the essence of nature to life through the use of natural silk, deep tones, and hand-dyed wool. His designs draw inspiration from the traditional patterns of Khorezm, Bukhara, and Kashkadarya, blending tradition with contemporary composition. For Matkarimov, a carpet is not merely art, it is a symbol of labor, patience, and willpower.
